What are netsuke?

In the traditional Japanese costume there are no pockets. To carry something the object was attached to a string with a toggle and the toggle slipped through the belt. This toggle is called netsuke. Over the years these toggles became more elaborately carved and became real status objects. With the disappearance of the traditional costume also the netsuke lost it function.
